Reading Workshop

Online Activities

Reading Workshop will be the time of day to enjoy and think about a wide variety of literature!  Each day, Reading Workshop will consist of a mini-lesson, independent practice, and sharing/reflection time.

  • Mini-Lessons will focus on strategies used for comprehension, reading like a writer, and understanding genre and story elements.

  • During the independent practice portion of the workshop, students will be practicing the strategies taught during the mini-lesson and previous mini-lessons.  They will also use this time to respond to their reading in their Reader's Notebook.  I will be conferencing with students or conducting guided reading groups.

  • The sharing/reflection time of Reading Workshop allow students to share with the classmates how they practiced the instructed strategy or to reflect on how this strategy affect their ability to read and create meaning in text.

Reader's Notebook

Students will use the Reader's Notebook daily during Reading Workshop.   The Reader's Notebook is a place for students to write about their thinking and growth as a reader, to explore their ideas about a text, and to document and support their thinking for class and small group discussions.  The Reader's Notebook has three parts:

  1. Reading Log - The student records the books he or she is reading, the genre, and difficulty level.

  2. Response entries - A place for readers to record ideas they wish to share  or to further explore on their own using strategies instructed in class.  The entries students write may lead to longer responses later or analysis for patterns of thinking.

  3. Strategies/Notes - This section allows students to record strategies worked on during mini-lessons or reading groups so they can be referred to later.

The Reader's Notebook will be assessed about every two weeks using this rubric.
